Fly Fishing for
Bonefish on the Flats of Key West
Capt Steven Lamp Dream Catcher Charters
Offers you tips on this fantastic Sport.
Key West for fly
fishing for bonefish? Yes indeed. With a little bit
of skill you can actually catch one and come back to
the dock with the one that made it to the boat
story. Unlike their Islamorada cousins our Key West
bonefish are not all that smart. In fact they are
kind of dumb, why? they have not seen 300 flats
fishing guides every day for the last 20 years. Key
West is a fishery that is not all that beaten. If
you really want to get away, look into fishing for
bonefish with me in the
Marquesas Keys.
September 07'
Report. I have seen more bonefish this year than
in years past. Catching one on the fly is very
realistic. Late September and Oct are great times to
try this. Call my office soon to get a spot. 1-888

Capt. Steven offers
The Bonefish range in size from 8 - 13
lbs here in Key West.
Offering the angler challenging but feasible casts and once hooked up
these fish really poor on the speed.
Not necessarily the next
most difficult however it can be tough. A good grasp on double haul
mechanics are a must as the Wind and the fast moving flats boat coupled
with a fast moving group of fish or a wary single mudding on the flat
can offer the angler a challenge for presentation. Once hooked up
Bonefish are notorious for blistering runs where good line management is
a must. Bone fish that I get out to from Key West are not small fish.
They start in the 7 lb range and go up to 12 and 13 lbs in certain areas
and times of the year.
To fish for bone fish
here the best months I like to take folks for them are May through the
3rd week in October. August, September and October are my favorite
months for them as there are lots of big and dumb fish around.
Morning or evening times are great for these fish during the hot months
but In Late September and Early October it makes no matter when you fish
for them.
Bone fish, although found here all
year round are best fished for in the Spring and fall weather permitting.
A warm front in the winter or a good rain in the summer will produce
some very hungry fish up on top of the flats. This year in 07 we have
been catching tailing redfish mixed with the
bonefish regularly. |
