Key West Fishing Report – September Tarpon

Key West fishing report, September Tarpon

Key was fishing report September Tarpon. It’s September 1 and officially summer is over. Thank Gawd!!! It was a hot one. Air temps went up in the 90s but our water temps stayed very moderate all summer long. The weed was an issue sargassum weed was everywhere in the Gulfstream and the southeast winds pushed it right up in to the islands on top of some of our best tarpon fishing. Tarpon season was the best. I’ve seen it in 20 years. It was really fantastic. Maybe it was a cyclical thing maybe it was our water temps maybe it was because the cruise ships were back in full force I don’t know, but I’ll take it. My crew at Dream Catcher Charters crushed em.

Tarpon Fishing Report

The tarpon fishing here in Key West truly never stopped. To this day, we have been getting on top of the Fish and offering our client shots at the Silver King on the regular. There are still some nice size fish in town. Add that to the massive numbers of juvenile and baby tarpon we are seeing in our regular haunts where we find them and some new ones. This is a really big deal for this time of year for those people that are in search of the Key West grand slam, which makes up of tarpon a permit and a bonefish in a single trip. Now is the time.! this is what I call SLAM season.

So in turn it’s not hard to imagine that on a half day Fishing charter here on one of my state of the art bay boats working with my crew here at dream Catcher Charters that an angler could expect to have at least an hour to an hour and a half of tarpon fishing in their fishing charter.

How Long Will The Tarpon Stick Around

That question is best left to the tarpon gods to answer, but I can give my best guess after 35 years of tarpon fishing here in Key West. I suspect these Witt will stick around all the way through the middle part of October at least now that said we are expecting to have a really really rough winter not a cold one just a stormy one, but we’ll keep our temps down probably in the high 60s to the low 70s for the better part of our winner. This will certainly have its effect on our tarpon. I am also the first person to say that Key West is a year-round tarpon fishery when the conditions are right it takes 24 hours and those Fisher inside our harbors are bays are cuts our channels and sometimes on our flats chewing away at our local bait fish population.

How Are We Fishing For The Tarpon

It all depends on our anglers and how they would like to fish for them. Depending what we have for our live bait selection, which is pretty good most of the time we will use those as our go to. Then we have angler that would like to catch tarpon using artificial lures and we can do that too. From there we have folks who like to complicate their lives with a fly rod, and we offer fly fishing charters on the daily with some of the best fly fishing gear that can be bought.
