Fishing Report and forecast for Key West, Florida for the first week of March 2025. I was at one of my favorite breakfast spots in Key West La Te Das on an absolutely stunning Sunday. My wife makes me take Sundays off. Looking around I was thinking about how nice it would be to go fishing. So, here I am taking about it with a Key West fishing report and forecast for the upcoming week.
Fishing Report - Weather Coming up
Weather in a few words…. Looks like this week coming up will hold a little bit more Key West winter like conditions.. Nothing too dramatic just some winds clocking around the rose from the tail end of the weather forecasted for North of us. The week will start off cooler then getting warmer mid week with the event of some sporty E to SE winds. The end of the week look for some mid 60s (cold for us) with some fresh N winds to finish off the forecast period. There is nothing we can see in the models so far to show and confidence that the typical High pressure we get establishes giving us those hard E winds mid month. Im sure they will be coming..
Fishing Report And Forecast
The past week has been pretty nice with good reports from the reef, backcountry, flats and deep sea. Here is the run down of what has been happening here with the Key West fishing report.
Deep Sea Fishing
Deep sea fishing was “ok” last week. The afternoon seemed to be the best for blackfin tunas and mahi. There were a few sailfish caught by the live bait guys but the bite has been no where near fire. Not like they have it on the East coast of Florida right now.
Looks like the sailfish will continue making their way down the Keys. Maybe not by this week coming up but soon hopefully in the numbers they are seeing up on the East coast. The current is just off the reef a couple miles, that with the SE winds by weeks end will keep our mahi possibilities up for the immediate forecast. I expect tuna bite will continue to be good especially early morning and afternoon. We are coming off the new moon and The “Worm Moon” is our next full moon. This might bump our (so far this year) meager numbers for wahoo – time will tell.

Reef Fishing
The shallow reefs and reef fishing have pretty good with some great catches of mutton snapper and yellowtail snapper. I will say we are seeing a more than usual undersize mutton snapper which I feel is a good sign. With al that we have been catching some good bag limits if time allows with some quality fish. The nice weather we had on most days in the end of February allowed us to reach some good fish and have some big fun. I always recommend folks come fish the reefs in January, February and March as the reef fish can be shallow and super cooperative with our windier conditions..

Reef Fishing
Coming up I see that nothing will change in the reef fishing as we have a good bit of bait moving on and off the reef still with plenty to eat. It’s a good bet that the snappers will keep chewing. Of course looking way down the road in April, May and June this will improve even more in the spawning months.

Backcountry Fishing
In the shallows of the backcountry fishing we have had some great luck tarpon fishing. It is not tarpon season but we have had a consistent bite on the warmer days. Add that to some great flats fishing which includes some bonefish and shots at permit. Our backcountry fishing charters area also still getting into trout, blue fish, pompano and lady fish for the cast and catch trips. My crew at Dream Catcher Charters is having a good bit of fun out there.
The cooler temps at the end of the week coming up will have its effect on the backcountry fishing. The shallows always get touched first by the cooler air and can drop our water temps pretty quick. This will slow the tarpon bite for sure but the rest of it will stay strong.
Fishing Charters Pro Tips
March is a very busy time for the fishing guides of Key West. We have a ton of people in town and seemingly everyone wants to get on the water. Booking ahead is always a good idea. Watching the weather and booking it also a good idea. Use the 10 day forecast to plan your fishing charters. Stay away from internet only booking sites that offer private fishing charters. If you cannot speak to a real person to book, don’t do it. Always talk to a person!
