Reef Fishing report for Key West October 5, 2025. September came and went with some amazing weather. I’m not sure any of us locals are used to Fishing the entire month of September without worrying about some tropical event that would surely and us all. September was truly epic with lower temps yet high humidity and light winds. Truly amazing. As we wander into October, the tips have come down even further, with fresh breezes now out of the Southeast. Perfect conditions for a fishing pier in Key West.
Reef Fishing Report
The reef fishing trips have been doing very well for my anglers these last few weeks. They typically want to put some meat in the box so my main focus to start with on most of my charters with your four and six hours in length is usually the yellowtail snapper. Along the way, I will also have them cast for mutton snapper. I put a mixed bag in the cooler. We have been doing very well.
I typically don’t use bait or chum on my snapper fishing trips. Most of what I do is artificial, and that has worked out very well in September so far into October. The grass on the reef has been light, making Fishing very easy using the lures that I use. We have been smashing some nice sized yellowtails and getting my peoples limits.
Below is one of the lures that I use to catch yellow tails on the reef. Made by MirroLure.

The MirroLure Mirrordine Chameleon Series. Has captured my latest “favorite lure”. Lifelike with an excellent swim quality I have found that the reef fish just cannot leave it alone. So far, the species that have surrendered themselves to this lure, have been yellowtail, snapper, mutton, snapper, cero mackerel and large, yellow jacks.

My reef fishing trips are typically done on board by Yellowfin 36 center console powered by triple Mercury Racing 300Rs. This boat makes for short time on long runs to get to the best reef fishing grounds south west of Key West. I offer 4, 6 and 8 hour reef, fishing charters daily.

This is one of my favorite times of the year to go reef fishing. With a cooler temps the lighter winds, and the water quality being just perfect. I find that when you go out we do very well and my people are very happy catching a good number of Fish. I really don’t have to run very far a six hour trip is perfect. Eight hour trips are also available where I can get further west to grounds that hold larger yellowtail snapper’s and mutton snapper’s .
