Flats Fishing Key West In June
Hole – E – Smokes has it been windy. Windiest fishing in June I have seen in ages. Looks like all that will come to an end here in the next few days. A great time to think about doing some amazing Key West flats fishing. Because of the winds we have been fishing the backcountry and flats now pretty hard with some of my anglers that have opted not to go offshore.
The Key West backcountry is loaded with some amazing shallow water flats fishing. We have bonefish, permit, tarpon, barracudas, jacks, sharks and snappers all in the shallows this time of the year making up a light tackle sport fishing anglers dream. It is not out of the realm of possibilities this time of the year to catch a Key West grand slam of tarpon, permit and bonefish in one long day trip.
June offers us a good bit of ingredients that make flats fishing pretty amazing. Lighter winds a close Gulf Stream and crystal clear waters with some big water tides flushing in and out of our backcountry islands on the regular. Our water quality off of Key West is truly amazing. This keeps our tropical species of fish very happy.
Key West bonefishing has been getting better and better every year. With my anglers I target them using spin fishing tackle with live bait or with artificial lure as well as with fly fishing gear. New fly fishermen have an excellent chance at hooking a bonefish with intermediate skill levels.
June July and August are amazing months to target the permit. These last few weeks we have seen a good number of permit on the flats with some outstanding catches. Permit fishing is a great way to combine hunting and fishing on one activity. Most of my anglers enjoy using spin fishing tackle with live crabs to sight cast for them, however I can also take you to the wrecks and reefs to target “permit the fancy jack” in deeper water this time of the year on my Key West reef fishing charters.

Tarpon fishing is typically very good in June. May was pretty dismal as compared to banner years in the past. This June tarpon fishing has picked up but still not at the amazing levels we usually see. That said, tarpon fishing is what we do here and we are jumping and catching some on the daily. Using live bait and artificial lures the tarpon are hungry and ready to eat.

This time of the year, they are all here. As I mentioned above the flats fishing grand slam of tarpon, permit and bonefish are around. Let’s not forget the amazing barracuda’s that lurk on the flats waiting for a tasty treat to fly by. On light tackle 12lb test these things are a power house! Seemingly always available the barracudas are a great way to sight fish and have more opportunities to catch fish than say the “big three”. We have seen some monsters on the flats lately with fish up over 20lbs!
Flats Fishing Charters
Fishing the flats is best done with an experienced fishing guide. Besides the obvious navigational issues with DIY flats fishing, there is a huge data base of tide and conditions info that every accomplished flats fishing guide has to make the most of the day for the anglers fishing with him. I offer 4, 6 and 8 hour flats fishing charters out of Key West on board my state of the art Yellowfin Carbon Elite bay boat. I use nothing but the best in tackle from DAIWA and ORVIS. I have over 30 years of day in and day out knowledge fishing the flats. See My Key West fishing rates for these charters
An added bonus to my fishing charters is my All In Wonder or All In One day of fishing. This is where we fish for as many species as possible from my Yellowfin Bay Boat.
Always call a flats fishing or backcountry fishing guide direct. These are private charters and questions about your day will go along way to a great experience… Feel free to text me with a any questions..
