Sept 15, 2020 – Before the rains this weekend and after as Tropical Storm Sally skirted our area headed for the Northern Gulf of Mexico the dolphin fishing in September has been terrific. Deep Sea fishing on board my 47 Ft Viking “In XS” I had some substantial catches before and after the system made its way by us. The Gulf Stream was located just 10-13 miles off of Sand Key Light just south of Key West most of the week. There were some mahi reported in the 250 – 350 ft range that were “out of the blue”. Further offshore I experienced most of my better fishing in the 650 – 750 ft range. One day following a nice weed line and the other day hitting pay dirt on a floating SCUBA scooter that we later found out, had dried from Aruba. That thing was loaded with some nice dolphin in the 7-10lb range.
Bonus fish were the black fin tunas that added a nice change to the box of fish. After working in the 750 range and getting a nice box of dolphin my mate and I put on the fast baits without meat. At one point hitting a dolphin and a blackfin in the same hook ups.
Deep Sea fishing Forecast
The winds are still out of the ESE and forecast to come down on Wednesday Thursday. My guess is that after the affects of Sally are off of us the winds will dies but the Gulf Stream may move further offshore making the best fishing for Deep Sea fishing in deeper water. Seasonally
I hate to say this in any report that future clientele may be reading that might want to go fishing. BUT… in the spirit of being up front.. September is not traditionally a great month for Deep Sea Fishing for dolphin. This September has been dramatically different and I see no reason for the change, nor can I put my finger on what it has been so good.
